Shenzhen Payment Setup Guide: WeChat Pay & Alipay for International Visitors

Updated: October 2026 • Reading time: ~6 minutes

China runs on mobile payments. Cash is rarely used, and foreign credit cards are only accepted at high-end hotels and international chains. If you're visiting Shenzhen, setting up WeChat Pay and Alipay before you arrive is the single most important thing you can do to make your trip smooth.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know — step by step.

Why You Need WeChat Pay and Alipay

In China, mobile payments have replaced cash and cards for almost everything: restaurants, taxis, street vendors, public transport, markets, and even small temples. You'll find QR codes everywhere. Without WeChat Pay or Alipay, you'll struggle to buy even a bottle of water.

The good news: since 2023, both apps allow international visitors to link foreign credit and debit cards. You no longer need a Chinese bank account.

WeChat Pay Setup (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Download WeChat

Download WeChat from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Create an account using your phone number.

Step 2: Verify Your Identity

Go to Me → Services → Wallet. You'll need to verify your identity by scanning your passport. This usually takes a few minutes.

Step 3: Link Your Card

Tap Bank Cards → Add a Card. Enter your Visa, Mastercard, or other supported card details. WeChat Pay supports most major international cards.

Step 4: Test a Payment

Find a small purchase to test with (a convenience store, café). Open WeChat, tap + in the top right, select Scan, and scan the merchant's QR code. Enter the amount and confirm.

Alipay Setup (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Download Alipay

Download Alipay from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Alipay has an English interface.

Step 2: Register with Your Phone Number

Sign up using your international phone number. Alipay supports SMS verification for most countries.

Step 3: Complete Identity Verification

Go to Me → Settings → Identity Verification. Scan your passport and take a selfie. Verification usually completes within minutes.

Step 4: Add Your Card

Tap Bank Cards → Add Card. Enter your international card details. Alipay supports Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover.

Step 5: Make Your First Payment

Tap Pay/Collect on the home screen to show your payment QR code to the merchant, or tap Scan to scan theirs.

WeChat Pay vs Alipay: Which Is Better?

Both are essential. But if you could only choose one:

  • WeChat Pay has a slight edge for street food, small vendors, and local markets — because WeChat is the dominant messaging app in China.
  • Alipay is slightly better for larger stores, malls, and official services (metro, utilities).

Our recommendation: set up both. It takes 10 minutes total and you'll never have to worry about payment.

Transaction Fees and Limits

  • Under 200 CNY (~$28 USD): No transaction fee from WeChat/Alipay
  • Over 200 CNY: ~3% fee charged by the payment provider
  • Your bank: Check if your card charges foreign transaction fees (most do: 1–3%)
  • Annual limit: International cards have a spending limit of $10,000 USD per year per app

Tips for Using Mobile Payments in Shenzhen

  • Keep your phone charged! You'll use it constantly for payments.
  • Save offline backup: screenshot your QR payment codes in case of bad signal.
  • Some vendors display both WeChat and Alipay QR codes. Use whichever you prefer.
  • Tipping is not customary in China. Don't try to tip via payment apps.
  • Always check the amount before confirming. Some QR codes are for "transfer to person" rather than merchant payment.
